When searching for a hair product the first thing you should do is look for the ingredients listed. The first item listed is the ingredient that is used the most. Some of you may see the ingredient alcohol and put that product down. Most alcohols can be drying and damaging to the hair but not all alcohols are bad. Below is a list of the alcohols you should be aware of in your hair products and I have also included the conditioning alcohols that are good to use.
The following are some names of alcohols that can result in dryness:
- SD alcohol 40
- Propanol
- Ethanol
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Propyl alcohol
- Denatured alcohol
- Alcohol denat
The fatty alcohols that are usually derived from natural sources such as coconut and palm oil, hence their inclusion in many natural products. Examples of conditioning alcohols are:
- Cetearyl alcohol (combination of cetyl and stearyl alcohols)
- Cetyl alcohol
- Lauryl alcohol
- Myristyl alcohol
- Behenyl alcohol
- Stearyl alcohol
